Getting to Know…
Paul Ceasar, LASERVIC President 2008-2009
1. How long have you been associated with LASERVIC and LCA?
I have been with LASERVIC and LCA since 1995. Prior to that, I lived in Texas and have been a member of ASERVIC since 1986.
2. What motivated you to join LASERVIC?
I have a background in theology and my interest in spirituality was a natural fit with this division. I have felt comfortable with those affiliated with LASERVIC as we share similar interests and values.
3. In what job setting do you practice as a counselor?
I am currently a counselor educator and an associate professor at Southeastern Louisiana University.
4. What is the most meaningful aspect of your work?
I enjoy teaching and especially appreciate my interaction with the students. It is gratifying to help counseling students expand their knowledge of the profession and to journey with them in their process of being caring and compassionate counselors.
5. Why and how did you become a counselor?
I have training and background in ministry. When I decided to leave the active ministry, counseling was a natural next step for me. I have always been motivated to make a difference in the lives of others and to continue to challenge myself to grow in life. The counseling profession fits those life goals.
6. How does being a member of LCA and LAASERVIC help you in your professional life?
LCA is my link to having a broader professional identity. It offers the opportunity to network, to expand my education, and to promote the counseling profession. LASERVIC has been a wonderful outlet to meet others in our profession who value spiritual growth in their lives. I have enjoyed getting to know these people and interacting with them at the annual conference as well as in other professional settings.
7. Tell us about your family.
I am married to Barbara Guillot and have three stepchildren and two grandchildren. We are currently living in Alexandria which is where I grew up. My family of origin is Syrian and both sets of grandparents came to the United States from Syria. I value my heritage and have enjoyed excellent food and extended family interactions in my lifetime. Each year around Christmas, we have a family gathering in which we celebrate our faith, food, and family. Last year, we had over one hundred people at our get-together in which we had Mass, a wonderful layout of food (kibbie, shish-ka-bob, grape leaves, etc.) and the opportunity to renew our family interactions.
8. What is your favorite leisure time activity?
I enjoy traveling and having time to read. I love being in settings where I can enjoy nature.
9. Is there anything else you’d like to add, maybe something not asked?
I feel very blessed in my life to have the opportunities that I have had to know many wonderful people. I am impressed continually with how resilient people are in dealing with challenging and difficult life situations. Our counseling profession and an organization like LASERVIC has provided me the venue to benefit from people who are inspiring and supportive. For this, I am most grateful.
